Demographic and clinical profile of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Bangladesh

Abstract:

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major public health issue in Bangladesh, influenced by socio-demographic factors, lifestyle habits, and comorbidities. Proper understanding of patient profiles is crucial for effective management.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the demographic and clinical characteristics of T2DM patients.

Methods: This a cross-sectional, observational study was conducted in the Department of Pharmacology in collaboration with the Department of Endocrinology out patients’ Department in Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Mymensingh. Bangladesh from July 2021 to June 2022. A total of 172 patients of both gender with type-2 diabetes mellitus were enrolled purposively. Data were analyzed using MS Office tools.

Results: The study included 172 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, predominantly female (64%). Most participants were housewives (60.4%), with 52% from rural areas. A significant proportion (45.3%) were overweight. The most common complication was peripheral neuropathy (32.6%), and hypertension was the leading comorbidity (39.5%). The duration of diabetes varied, with 29.1% having had the disease for over six years.

Conclusion: This study highlights a predominantly female T2DM population, with high rates of overweight and rural residence. Peripheral neuropathy and hypertension were the most common complications and comorbidities. These findings underscore the importance of targeted interventions for better management of T2DM patients in Bangladesh.
